There are two basic options when you are shopping for a printer. You will find that all printers are either colour or monochrome, also called mono. Colour printers print in black, shades of black and colour. Mono printers only print in black or shades of black. Depending upon your needs, you may need a colour printer or you may be able to do fine with a mono printer.
Colour printers may seem to be a great choice, but if you really do not need a colour printer then you can save money by buying a mono device. A mono printer can cost quite a bit less than a colour printer. Of course, a colour printer does give you the added ability to print colourful materials; however if black and white is sufficient for your requirements, the extra expense may not be worth it. In order to figure out if you need a colour or mono printer you will need to take a look at how you will be using the printer.
Part of the cost of a printer is the ink cartridge. Colour ink cartridges are more expensive than mono ink cartridges. If you are printing a large amount of material then it could be more cost efficient to go with a mono option.
Next, consider what types of documents you will be printing. If you foresee a need to print materials that are colourful then obviously you'll need a colour printer. On the other hand if you see yourself rarely printing anything with colour, then a mono printer could be a good option.
As mentioned, you can usually buy a mono printer for less than a colour printer. Ink cartridges for a mono printer are cheaper, too. Overall, if cost is your biggest concern then you might want to go with a mono printer. The price of colour printers is going down, so if you want a colour printer, but still need to watch the cost then you might be able to find one that works for your budget.
You may also find that the different features available for a colour printer verses a mono printer better suit your needs. Take a look and compare different printers before making the final decision. Only you can truly answer whether a colour or mono printer is the best choice for you.
